Japanese Star Anise prefers consistently moist soil but dislikes waterlogging. Water thoroughly when the top 2-3 cm of soil feels dry. Reduce watering slightly during winter dormancy.

Ensure good drainage to prevent root rot, especially in containers.

Prune in late winter or early spring to shape the plant and remove dead or crossing branches. Light pruning can be done after flowering to maintain size and encourage bushier growth.

Avoid heavy pruning as it can stress the plant.

Japanese Star Anise can be propagated from seeds sown in spring, but germination can be slow and erratic. Softwood cuttings taken in late spring or early summer, treated with rooting hormone, and kept in a warm, humid environment are more reliable for obtaining new plants.

Repot young plants every 2-3 years in spring, moving them to a slightly larger container. Mature plants may only need repotting every 4-5 years. Use a well-draining potting mix.

Ensure the new pot has adequate drainage holes.
