Water regularly, especially during dry spells, ensuring the soil is consistently moist but not waterlogged. Allow the top few centimeters of soil to dry out between waterings.

Prune back spent flower stalks in late autumn to tidy the plant and prevent self-seeding. In early spring, remove any dead or damaged stems from the previous year.

This encourages vigorous new growth and a more attractive plant.

Propagate by division of established clumps in early spring or by softwood cuttings taken in late spring/early summer. Seed can also be sown in autumn or early spring, though cultivars may not come true to type.

Repotting is rarely necessary for established garden plants. If growing in containers, repot every 2-3 years in early spring, moving to a slightly larger pot with fresh, well-draining potting mix.
