Saussurea alata prefers consistently moist soil but dislikes waterlogged conditions. Water thoroughly when the top 2-3 cm of soil feels dry.

Reduce watering in winter to prevent root rot, allowing the soil to dry out slightly more between waterings. Ensure good drainage.

Prune Saussurea alata after flowering to encourage a tidier appearance and prevent self-seeding if undesired. Remove spent flower stalks and any dead or damaged foliage.

Light pruning can also be done in spring to shape the plant and remove any winter damage.

Saussurea alata can be propagated by seed sown in spring under controlled conditions. Alternatively, division of established clumps in early spring or autumn is an effective method.

Ensure divisions have adequate roots and at least one growth bud.

Repot Saussurea alata every 2-3 years, or when the plant becomes root-bound. Use a well-draining potting mix. Repot in early spring before new growth begins.
