Watering, pruning, propagation, and repotting details from plant data
Scrophularia smithii prefers consistently moist soil but can tolerate occasional dryness once established. Water thoroughly when the top 2-3 cm of soil feels dry to the touch.
Avoid waterlogging, as this can lead to root rot. Reduce watering slightly during winter dormancy periods.
Pruning is mainly for shaping and encouraging bushier growth. Deadhead spent flower stalks to prevent self-seeding and promote continuous blooming.
Cut back plants in late autumn or early spring to remove dead or overgrown stems and maintain a tidy appearance.
Scrophularia smithii can be propagated from seeds sown in autumn or early spring. Division of established clumps is another effective method, best performed in early spring or autumn.
Softwood or semi-hardwood cuttings can also be taken in late spring or early summer.
Repotting is typically only necessary for container-grown plants, usually every 2-3 years. Choose a pot one size larger than the current one. Use a well-draining potting mix.
Repot in early spring before new growth begins to minimize transplant shock and allow roots to establish.
