This panicle is composed of numerous spikelets, each containing two florets. The glumes of the spikelets are boat-shaped, enclosing the lemmas and paleas. The seeds, which are the primary product of cultivation, are ovoid and shiny, enclosed within the persistent glumes, and are the source of the common name "canarygrass" due to their historical use as birdseed. Phalaris canariensis is native to the Mediterranean region, including parts of southern Europe, North Africa, and the Middle East. It thrives in a variety of habitats, often found in disturbed areas, fields, roadsides, and waste ground, preferring well-drained soils and open, sunny locations.
