Smokebush is drought-tolerant once established, preferring well-drained soil. Water moderately during the first year to help establish roots. After that, water only during prolonged dry spells.

Overwatering can lead to root rot, so allow the soil to dry out slightly between waterings.

Prune in late winter or early spring before new growth appears. To encourage flowering and maintain shape, remove any dead, damaged, or crossing branches.

For the characteristic smoky effect, prune lightly to maintain the shrub's natural form. Heavy pruning can be done to rejuvenate older plants.

Smokebush can be propagated by semi-hardwood cuttings taken in summer. Dip cuttings in rooting hormone and plant in a well-draining medium. Alternatively, seed propagation is possible but may result in variable traits.

Layering in late spring or early autumn can also be successful.

Smokebush generally does not require frequent repotting, as it prefers to be slightly root-bound.

If a container-grown plant becomes severely root-bound, repot it in early spring into a slightly larger container with fresh, well-draining potting mix. Ensure adequate drainage holes.
