Sour cherries prefer consistent moisture, especially during fruit development. Water deeply when the top 2-5 cm of soil feels dry. Avoid waterlogged conditions, as this can lead to root rot.

Reduce watering slightly in late fall to allow the plant to harden off for winter.

Prune sour cherries in late winter or early spring while dormant. Remove dead, damaged, or crossing branches. Aim for an open, vase-shaped canopy to improve air circulation and light penetration.

Thin out crowded branches to encourage better fruit production and easier harvesting.

Sour cherries are primarily propagated by grafting onto rootstock. Budding in summer or whip-and-scion grafting in late winter are common methods.

Seed propagation is possible but often results in trees with undesirable fruit characteristics and takes many years to fruit.

Repotting is generally not applicable to established sour cherry trees as they are typically planted directly in the ground. Container-grown young trees may need repotting every 2-3 years into a larger container as they grow, usually in early spring before new growth starts.
