Check the top few centimeters of soil; if dry, it's time to water.

Prune in late winter or early spring before new growth begins. Remove dead, damaged, or crossing branches.

You can also prune to maintain shape and size, or to encourage a bushier habit by cutting back stems to encourage new shoots. This also improves air circulation.

Sambucus australis can be propagated by softwood or semi-hardwood cuttings taken in late spring or summer. Root cuttings taken in late winter are also effective.

Seed propagation is possible but may result in variation, and requires stratification. Cuttings typically root well in moist, well-draining medium.
