Tamarillos require consistent moisture, especially when young and fruiting. Water deeply when the top 2-3 cm of soil feels dry. Avoid waterlogged conditions, which can lead to root rot.

Reduce watering slightly during cooler, dormant periods but never let the soil completely dry out.

Prune tamarillos in late winter or early spring to shape the plant and remove dead, damaged, or crossing branches. To encourage fruiting, you can prune back new growth by about one-third in late spring.

Hard pruning can rejuvenate older plants, but may sacrifice fruit for a season.

Tamarillos are easily propagated from seeds sown in spring, which require warmth and consistent moisture. Cuttings taken from mature wood in late summer or autumn can also be rooted.

Grafting is also possible, leading to faster fruiting and improved disease resistance in some cases.

Young tamarillos benefit from repotting annually into slightly larger containers to accommodate their rapid growth. Mature plants in the ground generally do not require repotting.

If container-grown plants become pot-bound, repot in early spring before new growth begins.
