Watering, pruning, propagation, and repotting details from plant data
Maquei prefers consistently moist soil but not waterlogged. Water deeply when the top 2-3 cm of soil feels dry. Reduce watering in winter, allowing the soil to dry out slightly more between waterings.
Ensure good drainage to prevent root rot, especially in containers.
Prune Maquei in late winter or early spring before new growth begins. Remove any dead, damaged, or crossing branches to maintain a healthy structure.
Light pruning can also be done after flowering to shape the plant and encourage bushier growth.
Maquei can be propagated by semi-hardwood cuttings taken in summer or by seeds sown in autumn. Cuttings should be treated with rooting hormone and placed in a well-draining medium.
Seeds require a period of cold stratification before germination.
Repot young Maquei plants every 1-2 years in spring, or when root-bound. Use a well-draining potting mix. For mature plants, repotting may only be necessary every 3-5 years.
Ensure the new pot is only slightly larger than the current one.
