Watering, pruning, propagation, and repotting details from plant data
Woodland Sunflower prefers consistent moisture, especially when establishing. Water regularly, allowing the top 2-3 cm of soil to dry out between waterings. Reduce watering in winter when the plant is dormant.
Avoid waterlogged conditions, which can lead to root rot.
Deadheading spent flowers can encourage reblooming and prevent self-seeding. In late fall or early spring, cut back the dead stalks to about 10-15 cm from the ground.
This tidies the plant and removes potential overwintering sites for pests.
Helianthus divaricatus can be propagated by division of established clumps in early spring. Seeds can also be sown outdoors in fall or stratified indoors and sown in spring.
Division is often the most successful method for home gardeners.
This perennial is best left in its desired location and does not typically require frequent repotting. If division is performed, the divisions can be replanted directly into the garden.
For container-grown plants, repot only when severely root-bound, usually every 2-3 years.
