Water hickory thrives in consistently moist soil. During establishment, water deeply and regularly, especially during dry spells. Once mature, it tolerates occasional inundation but prefers not to dry out completely.

Ensure good drainage to prevent root rot, despite its tolerance for wet conditions.

Pruning is typically minimal for water hickory, mainly focused on removing dead, damaged, or crossing branches. This can be done in late winter or early spring before new growth begins.

Proper structure is established when young, reducing the need for extensive pruning later.

Propagation is most reliably achieved through seed, which requires stratification. Soak seeds in water for 24 hours, then stratify in a moist medium (like sand or peat moss) in a refrigerator for 90-120 days.

Direct sowing in fall is also effective.

Repotting is not applicable to water hickory as it is a large tree grown outdoors. Its extensive root system and mature size make it unsuitable for container cultivation.
