Catnip prefers consistently moist soil, especially when young. Water thoroughly when the top inch or two of soil feels dry to the touch. Ensure good drainage to prevent root rot, as catnip dislikes soggy conditions.

Once established, it becomes quite drought-tolerant and can withstand periods of dryness, making it a low-maintenance plant. Reduce watering in cooler, dormant months.

Regular pruning is beneficial for catnip to encourage bushier growth and prevent it from becoming leggy. Pinch back stems frequently, especially before flowering, to promote new growth and increase leaf production.

Deadhead spent flowers to prevent prolific self-seeding, which can lead to it becoming invasive. A more substantial cutback in mid-summer can rejuvenate the plant, ensuring a fresh flush of leaves for harvesting.

Catnip is easily propagated by seeds, cuttings, or division. Seeds can be sown directly outdoors in spring after the last frost or started indoors.

For cuttings, take 4-6 inch stem sections from healthy plants, remove lower leaves, and root them in water or moist potting mix.

Division of mature clumps in spring or fall is also effective, simply separating sections with roots and replanting them.

Repotting catnip is typically needed every 1-2 years for container-grown plants, or when the plant becomes root-bound, indicated by roots growing out of drainage holes or stunted growth.

Choose a pot one size larger with good drainage. Repot in spring, gently removing the plant, loosening roots, and placing it in fresh, well-draining potting mix.

This provides new nutrients and space for continued healthy growth.
